Below are some frequently asked questions about dog training at Love For Paws. Learn what to expect when you book a session!

How long does each dog training session last?

Each training session lasts between one to two hours, ensuring you have ample time to learn the techniques, practice them, and ask questions.

What happens during an in-home dog training session?

When I arrive, we kick off with a brief discussion about the challenges you're facing and what our approach should be, allowing your dogs to adjust to my presence in your home. Then, I’ll demonstrate various training techniques, and you’ll practice them so I can help troubleshoot any issues. After our session, you’ll receive a full summary of everything we covered so you can practice these techniques with your dog before our next meeting.

What takes place during a remote training session?

The remote session mirrors the in-person session closely, with the key difference being that I’ll be providing more detailed guidance. I will walk you through each technique step by step, observe, and assist with troubleshooting any challenges. Afterward, I’ll provide you with a written summary of what to focus on before our next appointment.

Is remote training effective?

Absolutely! In some cases, it can even be even more beneficial. For example, if your dog is particularly fearful of strangers and you need to tackle multiple issues at once, having a trainer in your home initially can actually slow down progress. I also successfully work with clients across state lines where remote training is necessary.

How long will it take for my dog to be trained?

It varies. Dogs are much like people. If you’ve ever tried to break a bad habit or work through personal challenges, you understand that everyone's journey to success looks different. I will place your dog in the most appropriate training package; for instance, a dog learning house manners and potty training will require far fewer sessions than one dealing with leash reactivity and separation anxiety.

What training methods do you utilize? We use gentle, scientifically-backed methods, including positive reinforcement, management, training of alternate behaviors, and desensitization/counterconditioning. We do not force your dog into actions they resist. Training through fear is not only inhumane but also less effective. Instead, we uncover what excites and motivates your dog to work collaboratively with us in changing their behavior!

Does everyone in the family need to be present for the session?

It's best if the whole family is around for at least part of the session because everyone should be on the same page when interacting with your dog. And anyone who provides an integral part of your dog's care should definitely participate. For ex: If your partner is the primary dog walker and we are working on leash reactivity, they absolutely should be there. Kids can benefit quite a bit from training sessions too and we sometimes use training games that the whole family can play!
